How to Get Hard Leather in Dragonwilds (Tannery Recipe and Farming Route)

Hard leather is 2 leather plus 1 adhesive at the Tannery. Where the hides and swamp tar come from, the scraps shortcut, and what it unlocks.

Hard leather goes into 41 recipes, including the power level 3 Hard Leather Body set and several iron pieces, from helmets to shields. If you’re stuck on it, the problem is almost never the recipe. It’s the adhesive.

Here’s the whole chain, with numbers from the game files.

The recipe

Hard Leather is made at the Tannery:

The recipe doesn’t need a skill level or a pickup trigger. It unlocks the moment you interact with a Tannery. If you’ve built one, you already have it.

The Tannery itself costs 12 ash logs, 4 animal bones and 2 coarse thread, and it unlocks after you’ve picked up ash logs and animal bones. See the Tannery page for the exact list.

Step 1: leather from hides

Normal Leather also comes from the Tannery: 1 Animal Hide makes 1 Leather. Big animals drop hides. The drop tables say:

CreatureHides per kill
Dire Wolf4
Wolf2
Cow2
Goat1 to 2
Deer1
Ram1

Dire wolves are the best return per fight if you can handle them. Cows are the safe option and give 2 every time.

Small game drops Animal Hide Scraps instead. Three scraps make one Leather at the Tannery, so rats, kebbits and chinchompas aren’t wasted trips.

Step 2: adhesive from swamp tar

This is the bottleneck. Adhesive comes from the Kiln: 1 Swamp Tar makes 1 Adhesive, and the recipe unlocks when you first pick up Swamp Tar.

Swamp Tar has only two creature sources in the data:

So every Hard Leather you make costs one Putrid Rat. Plan around that. When I’m short, I farm rats first and hides second, because the hides pile up anyway while you play.

The shortcut: hard leather scraps

Fellhollow adds a second route. Hard Leather Scraps drop from the region’s undead cattle:

Four scraps make one Hard Leather, no adhesive needed. The recipe unlocks when you first pick up a scrap. If you’re already in Fellhollow, this beats the tar route.

Drops and packs

You can skip crafting entirely with a few sources:

What hard leather is for

The headline use is the Tier 3 hard leather set at the Armour Bench:

PieceHard LeatherWool ThreadBronze Bar
Hard Leather Cowl421
Hard Leather Body1042
Hard Leather Chaps642
Full set20105

The armour recipes unlock when you pick up your first Hard Leather. A full set through the main route works out to 40 hides and 20 swamp tar, so budget for 20 Putrid Rats.

After that, it keeps showing up. Iron helmets, the iron shield and several iron weapons all take some, and it’s the base for Draconic Leather later on. Keep a stack in the chest. Every item page in the database lists exactly what uses it under “Used for”.
